Senator Payman opposes the Social Media Ban proposal. Social Media is harming Australian children, and megacorporations are profiting from their suffering. This proposal, however, will make the problem worse. It will drive Australia’s youth to social media platforms that are more dangerous and more unmoderated. It will increase isolation for young people in regional and rural areas. It will require adults to provide information that will be leaked in data breaches, which will consequently become more common. We need to give young people the skills to deal with the online world, rather than cutting them off from it, only to throw them in the deep end when they turn 16.
